About CERU

The Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU) is a small group of scientists and technicians within the Department of Zoology and Entomology in University of Pretoria. CERU functions as an independent research group under the Directorship of the Head of the Department and research leadership of Emeritus Professor Rudi van Aarde. It finds logistical and financial support from industry, non-governmental organisations, and contract-related projects. CERU serves as a platform for ecological research that contribute to the conservation of species and benefits from collaboration with Professor Stuart Pimm at Duke University and Professor Al Roca at the University of Illinois. Our research activities are sanctioned by conservation agencies across southern Africa.

CERU's aims include:

  • Maintaining a logistical and financial platform for innovative conservation related research.
  • Providing industries (conservation, health, agriculture, mining, and forestry) and society with the expertise and advice to maintain ecological processes as a goal of conservation ecology.
  • Develop science-based and humane conservation incentives to inform societal values and decision taking processes.
